Track Your Business Finances Like a Pro – Even Without QuickBooks!
How’s your business doing this year? Are you on track according to your budget?
In the beginning, I didn’t have the budget for fancy accounting tools like QuickBooks, so I got scrappy and tracked everything on a simple spreadsheet – and it worked for me for years!
You Don’t Need Fancy Tools to Keep Your Numbers in Line
If you’re just starting out or want to simplify things, I’m here to tell you that you don’t need an expensive program or a bookkeeper to keep your financials in order. Sometimes the old-fashioned way is the best way!
That’s why I’ve created a super simple spreadsheet – the same one I’ve used for years to track both my budget (what I anticipated making and spending) and my actual income (the sales I made), along with my Profit & Loss (PNL) (your sales minus the cost of goods sold and expenses).
What Are COGS & Expenses?
To keep things clear:
-
COGS (Cost of Goods Sold): These are direct costs tied to the products or services you sell. For example, if you’re a hairstylist, your COGS might include shampoo, conditioner, and other products you use when making sales.
-
Expenses:Â These are the costs you incur to run your business, whether or not you make sales. Think rent, utilities, and insurance.
